Ambulance dispatchers are the front line in emergency services communication.

Ambulance dispatchers, or emergency medical dispatchers, answer calls, provide instructions to callers and prioritize responses. They work for ambulance companies, police departments, and local and state government agencies. Ambulance dispatchers must have accredited training.

  1. Education

    • An aspiring ambulance dispatcher should earn a high school diploma. According to an O*NET Online survey, 76 percent of ambulance dispatchers reported having a high school diploma or GED, as opposed to a bachelor's degree. Ambulance dispatchers must complete at least three months of on-the-job training, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    Preliminary Training

    • The National Academies of Emergency Dispatch offers specialized training for ambulance dispatchers. The NAED certification course provides 40 hours of structured training. New ambulance dispatchers learn emergency communication technologies, communication techniques, legal issues and how to deal with job stress. Other companies offer similar training courses.

      According to the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch, ambulance dispatchers who complete the 40-hour initial training program may apply for the emergency telecommunicator credential. Candidates must pass the certification examination with a score of at least 80 percent, and the credential must be renewed after two years.
