Pros & Cons of LED Grow Lights

Pros & Cons of LED Grow Lights thumbnail
LED Grow Lights provide light for planting all year round.

Appearing in the 1960s, the light emitting diode (LED) has recently become available to the residential market, according to NAHB Research Center. LED grow lights are used when planting vegetables, herbs and flowers indoors. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Pro: Power Saver

    • LED grow lights are powered through a semiconductor that converts energy into light, according to NAHB Research Center. The device requires less energy to operate and reduces the need for excessive electrical power.

    Pro: Longer Life

    • The average life span of an LED grow light is around 35,000 to 50,000 hours, according to Simply-Hydroponics.com. Compared with the 1,000 to 2,000 hours of an incandescent light or 30,000 hours of fluorescent lighting, the LED light has a longer life span.

    Con: Color Distortion of Plants

    • A disadvantage of using LED grow lights is that the source of the light is artificial and creates an altered color in plants which is not produced when the plant is placed in natural or incandescent light, according to Simply-Hydroponics.com.

    Con: Intolerable to Heat

    • LED grows lights do not tolerate heat. Too much heat will reduce the light output and affect the life span of the light, according to NAHB Research Center.
