Can I Claim Dental Bills on My Taxes?

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) does allow for the deduction of dental bills for taxpayers who itemize their returns. Understanding whether or not you qualify for the deduction, and how to claim it if you do qualify, will reduce your stress when tax filing season rolls around.

  1. Significance

    • The dollar amount of your dental bills, as well as your adjusted gross income (AGI), determine whether you're eligible to claim the expense on your tax return. In general, you can claim dental bills on your return for yourself, your spouse and your dependents.

    Covered Expenses

    • Medical and dental tax deduction covers such items as false teeth, x-rays, fillings and other costs for the treatment of ailments and or preventative care. Teeth whitening is not covered by this deduction.

    Limitation

    • Only the portion of your dental and medical expenses that exceed 7.5 percent of your AGI are eligible for the tax deduction, explains the IRS website.

    Process

    • You must itemize your tax return in order to claim your dental expenses. Complete Schedule A, attach it to your Form 1040 and mail it in or submit it electronically.
