Dishwashers, like any other appliance, may need extra cleaning occasionally. Commercial products specifically made to clean the inside of dishwashers are available but they can be expensive. Inexpensive home remedies may do the trick. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Extra Cleaning

    • Hard water can deposit mineral films on dishes, pumps and the interior moving parts of dishwashers. This can eventually cause mechanical issues or leave a dirty-looking film on clean dishes. Check the manufacturer's manual, however, before trying any home remedies; some manuals suggest a few home remedies or let consumers know specifically which ones not to use on their products.

    Vinegar

    • Vinegar can be used to remove hard water mineral buildup on the inside of dishwashers, according to the Michigan State University Extension. Vinegar can also help remove soap scum. Add one cup of vinegar to an empty dishwasher at the beginning of the regular wash cycle but after the dishwasher fills with water.

    Elbow Grease

    • Sometimes good old-fashioned elbow grease is the best home remedy. If stains build up in the dishwasher, pull on some rubber gloves and scrub the stains with dishwasher detergent and water.
