What Is a Wholesale VoIP Route?
VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a system that channels telephone calls over the Internet. The call can originate or terminate from a computer or a house telephone. Wholesale VoIP services transport telephone calls in bulk over the Internet or across dedicated data lines.

Function
-
If, for example, a company offers services in the USA but is based in India, when customers dial the company's U.S. number these calls are routed to India. In order to carry large volumes of calls at lower costs, the carrier compresses the digital signal during transportation. At the destination the carried data is reassembled into sound and played to the receiver.
Features
-
Wholesale VoIP providers offer other services as extras to their routing package. The main additional feature usually required is VoIP termination. This involves carrying the call to its destination on the Public Switched Telephone Network.

Users

The types of organizations who use wholesale VoIP routes are call centers and help desks that are located a long distance from the market they are serving. Calling card companies also channel calls over wholesale VoIP routes.
