Composite Mechanic Career Overview

A composite mechanic handles the shaping of fiberglass and metal panels, often used for airplanes. Some are also responsible for maintaining and repairing these materials. Composite mechanics use a wide array of tools and machinery to cut, layout and even sew materials.

  1. Basics

    • Composite mechanics must be able to follow blueprints or other written instructions explaining how materials should be measured, cut and shaped. Once those steps are complete, composite mechanics might laminate or add resin to the material to prepare it for the next step, which varies by the material's use.

    Skills

    • Composite mechanics must work well with their hands and possess the strength needed to sometimes operate heavy machinery and equipment used to cut fiberglass and metal. Basic reading, writing and math skills are also needed.

    Qualifications

    • Most composite mechanics are required to possess at least a high school diploma (or equivalent) before being hired. Some may need prior experience working with machinery and tools used to weld or cut metal.

    Wages

    • According to PayScale.com, aircraft service technicians such as composite mechanics earned, on average, anywhere from $39,000 to more than $62,000 per year in September,2010.
