What Is EPDM Plastic?

Save

EPDM or ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer is a relatively inexpensive plastic that is stable, durable, and highly resistant to heat, ozone, water, and aging by weather, according to EPDM Coatings LLC. It is used in many products including tires, hoses, seals, coatings, and roofing membranes.

Chemical Resistance

  • EPDM is resistant to hydraulic fluid and chemicals that are either acidic or alkaline, according to West Coast Gasket. EPDM is not resistant to solvents, oils, and aromatic hydrocarbons, however. It does not emit strong odors or fumes, but it is not appropriate for food-related applications.

Resists Abrasion

  • In addition, EPDM resists tearing and abrasion. It also makes a good electrical insulator, states EPDM Coatings.

Liquid Rubber

  • Liquid EPDM Rubber, a flexible product, can be used to install or repair roofs. It stays cooler, cleaner, and is easier to install than asphalt and tar. It is nonpolar and nonreactive, and it remains stable in saltwater.
