Anyone can have a car titled in his name in North Carolina.

It is possible to title a vehicle to a person of any age in the state of North Carolina. However, there are several requirements before a car can be registered and license plates issued.

  1. North Carolina Driver's License

    • You must have a valid North Carolina driver's license to register a vehicle, unless you are on active duty in the military. In 1997, North Carolina enacted the Graduated Driver Licensing System. To be eligible for a driver's license, a person under the age of 18 must have a level 1 Learner's Permit for one year beginning anytime after their 15th birthday and complete a state-approved driver's education course. Next they need a level 2 Learner's Permit for a minimum of six months. The earliest a person can hold a driver's license in North Carolina is 16 and one-half.

    Insurance

    • You must have proof of liability insurance before you can register your vehicle. In North Carolina, liability policies can be issued to persons of any age.

    Other Documents

    • In addition to the driver's license and insurance requirements, to register a newly acquired vehicle in North Carolina you must have the following documents: a title application, an odometer disclosure, Damage Disclosure Statement form MVR-181, a North Carolina state inspection and Declaration of Eligible Risk form MVR-615. Copies of these forms and more information about them can be found on the North Carolina Department of Transportation website.
