Guide to Setting a Table
A properly set table is attractive and functional. Since each meal normally includes different courses, the dishes and flatware differ as well. Settings may vary based on the dishes served and the degree of formality. Does this Spark an idea?

Breakfast and Lunch Settings

Dishes typically include a dinner plate, bread and butter plate, and cup and saucer for hot beverages. Lunch settings may include a soup bowl. A cold beverage or juice glass is necessary. A dinner fork, dinner knife, and teaspoon are appropriate flatware.
Supper and Dinner Settings

These dish settings are identical to the breakfast and lunch settings, except for the addition of a salad plate, if applicable to the meal. The previous flatware selection expands to include a salad fork and soupspoon. A wine glass rounds out the supper and dinner glassware selection.

Formal Dinner Settings

The most elaborate setting includes the aforementioned pieces, as well as a starter or base plate on which the dinner plate sits. A butter spreader is place atop the bread and butter plate. A dessert fork and dessert spoon go above the starter plate. Suitable wine glasses or champagne flutes are included in the settings.
