Purpose of a Stereo Microscope

A stereo microscope, also known as a dissecting microscope, differs from a traditional compound microscope inasmuch as it has two eyepieces, not one. However, there are other differences between the two types of microscopes, and stereo microscopes are used for distinct purposes.

  1. Magnification

    • A stereo microscope is not intended to provide high levels of magnification. Instead, it provides magnification -- typically between 15 and 45 times -- of three-dimensional objects so that they can be examined or worked.

    Dissection

    • Stereo microscopes are ideal for examining dissection specimens. They allow depth perception and permit specimens to be manipulated while under the microscope. Essentially, any everyday objects -- a coin, a stamp, a rock or a plant -- can be placed under a stereo microscope and examined without the need to prepare a microscope slide.

    Lathing & Engraving

    • Stereo microscopes are also used in industry for cutting parts and engraving intricate details. They allow the surfaces of small parts to be seen clearly, while still allowing a wide enough field of view for tooling operations to be completed successfully.
