Watercraft over 12 feet in length are required to obtain an identification number in Illinois.

The Boat Registration and Safety Act of Illinois requires motorboats and sailboats over 12 feet in length to obtain an identification number. It also gives state authorities power to enforce compliance with the act, according to Section 2-1 of the act.

  1. Identification Number Application and Fees

    • The owner of the watercraft must file an application for an identification number issued by Illinois. The filing fees can vary from $6 to $100, depending upon the class of watercraft, according to Section 3-2 of the act.

    Identification Number Display

    • In Illinois, the identification number must be painted or attached to both sides of the front of a watercraft. The identification number must be in block characters at least three inches tall, according to Section 3-3 of the act.

    Transfer of Identification Number

    • If you purchase a watercraft in Illinois, you are required to file an application for transfer of the identification number with 15 days, according to Section 3-5 of the act.
