Macrobiotic eating, a diet plan which originated in Japan, is attuned to philosophies of "green" living. If you follow such a diet, you will choose foods that are heart-healthy and low in animal products, as well as seasonal and local.

  1. Food Types

    • A macrobiotic diet consists of fruits, vegetables, fermented soy foods such as miso and tempeh, extra virgin olive oil, whole grains and legumes. This diet can be vegan or extremely low in animal products, as protein can come from legumes and soy products. Small amounts of fish, however, are allowed in the diet.

    How To Eat

    • The philosophy of a macrobiotic diet involves respecting the environment, and the people and animals who share it. Macrobiotic eaters make every effort to choose seasonal, locally grown foods in their most natural state, eating slowly and chewing thoroughly. Consuming food that is excessively spicy is not recommended, and vitamin supplements are frowned upon.

    Benefits

    • Macrobiotic eating is believed to prevent cancer and other chronic diseases, as the diet is low in fat and toxins, and rich in nutrients.
