Some housing inspector training includes doing actual home inspections.

Finding the right housing inspector course to meet your schedule, budget and educational needs may seem daunting. However, knowing what to expect and what to look for in housing inspector training programs will help you find the best course for you.

  1. Types

    • Housing inspector training is offered through private vocational schools and some community colleges in several formats--correspondence, Internet, Internet and classroom combination and classroom only. Programs can range from 48 hours to 140 hours, according to training information provided by the National Association of Housing Inspectors.

    Features

    • Training program curricula can vary with the length and depth of the course. A more comprehensive course can include fieldwork, in which you perform actual inspections as part of the class, instruction in running your own housing inspection business and preparation for the national home inspector exam.

    Considerations

    • Some states require that specific coursework be included in housing inspector training programs; in choosing a training program, be sure that it meets your state's requirements (see Resources).
