IrfanView for Linux

IrfanView for Linux thumbnail
The penguin is the symbol for the Linux operating system.

The free graphics software IrfanView lets you view and manipulate a wide range of image files. While not create for the Linux platform, IrfanView can run on a Linux computer.

  1. Image Types

    • IrfanView can open and save over 100 different image file formats, from animated cursors to Windows Metafile Format clip art. It can also open a select number of video files.

    Considerations

    • IrfanView is designed to work on the Windows operating system, and there is no native Linux version. As freeware, IrfanView cannot be used for commercial work on either a Windows or Linux operating system.

    Solution

    • IrfanView's creator suggests installing a Windows emulating software, such as WINE, or a Linux-based Windows emulator to run IrfanView on a Linux computer. Download the ZIP version of IrfanView and unpack it within your Linux environment to avoid having to run the Windows Installer, which may not work on Linux.
