Dining Room Decorating Advice

Dark furniture can overwhelm the room.

A dining room may be used infrequently and reserved for special meals only or it may be the room your family sits in to eat dinner night after night. Decorate the room to match your tastes and its function. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Features

    • The table is a primary feature of a dining room. The room may also contain a hutch or sideboard for serving food and storing dishes. The furniture should ideally match and not be so dark that it makes the room seem small. A large light, such as a chandelier over the table, is another common feature of a dining room. Fabric covers over the chairs can brighten up an otherwise dull room.

    Textiles

    • Textiles can quickly change the look and feel of a dining room. They can match the season, such as neutral colored tablecloths and napkins in the fall, or festive, holiday-themed napkins in December. The curtains should let a bit of light filter in.

    Decorative Objects

    • A mirror on the wall can make a small dining room appear bigger. If the dining room is small, keep knickknacks to a minimum. A floral centerpiece on the table will brighten the room. Tea lights or candlesticks on the table and sideboard add another option for lighting.
