What is a Random Orbit?
A random orbit is a short name for a type of electrical power tool called a "random orbital sander." A random orbit is a hand-held sander that is ideal for several projects around the home.

Features
-
An orbit sander works by having an interior sandpaper disk move in a circle while the outer whole of the tool moves in an oval. As a result, no part of the random orbit goes over a surface in the same path.
Function
-
Random orbits used are primarily as a replacement for traditional vibrating belt sanders and, therefore, have a wide variety of uses. Their primary use is to strip paint off walls, but they can also be used to clean between preparing coats of paint or to smooth metal.

Considerations
-
There are advantages and disadvantages when comparing a random orbit to traditional sanders. One advantage is that the random orbit's sanding goes over different paths and does not leave swirl marks. A disadvantage is that random orbits are traditionally less effective at removing a large amount of material in a short period of time when compared to other types of sanders.
