Domain Name to IP Conversion

Converting a domain name to its IP address is an easy process.

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a number assigned to any device that connects to the Internet. This number allows other users and computers to identify and communicate with the device. Every domain name with a live website also has an IP address (the address is still assigned to a device -- in this case, the server upon which the domain is hosted). Converting a domain name to its IP address is a simple process.

  1. Conversion

    • To convert a domain name to its unique IP address, visit a conversion website such as Domaintoip.com. Type the domain name in the designated field (include any prefixes such as "www" and any suffixes such as "org") and click the "Convert" or "Lookup" button. The IP address will be displayed as a series of digits, consisting of four sets of numbers, each ranging from 0 to 255 and separated by periods. For example: 198.168.1.1

    Additional Information

    • Along with a domain's IP address, most conversion websites will supply additional information about the domain such as the individual or company that owns the domain and the owner's physical address. Even more elaborate information about a domain name and its owner can be found at the WhoIs.com website.

    Reverse Conversion

    • At times, it may be necessary to determine a domain name when only its IP address is known. A reverse lookup can help identifying spam sources or suspicious online users whose IP addresses have been identified by web tracking software. To perform a lookup, visit an IP-to-domain conversion website, enter the IP address (with periods included) and click the "Convert" or "Lookup" button.
