Define a Military Model Leadership Philosophy

Although the details of military leadership philosophies vary among the armed forces, all of them encompass three common threads: development of character, mastery of skills and the ability to take action to accomplish a mission. The U.S. Army defines leadership succinctly in its motto of "Be, Know, Do."

  1. Vision and Values

    • According to the U.S. Army Leadership Manual, a warrior leader must be able to communicate a vision or purpose to an organization in order to achieve a goal. In doing so, he is acting as an instrument of the people of the United States and abides by the Oath of Enlistment and set of values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and courage.

    Knowledge and Skills

    • Warrior leaders must acquire knowledge in four areas. He becomes well versed in technical skills, such as using weapons and operating equipment. He masters tactics, which involves making the correct decisions concerning units in battle. He also develops interpersonal and conceptual skills. In other words, a leader manages people as well as applies military doctrine and concepts to missions.

    Decisions and Actions

    • A warrior leader's actions can be displayed in three ways. He motivates and influences others to execute his decisions. He determines what operations are required to complete a mission. Finally, he searches for areas in need of improvement regarding the organization's capacity to carry out future missions.
