Sodium can lead to health problems if consumed at excessive levels, but people often consume far more sodium than they should. In addition to monitoring table salt, they should note the sodium levels in the foods they buy.

  1. Daily Intake

    • According to the Healthy Eating Club, the safe daily sodium range for adults lies between 900 and 2,300 milligrams per day. Children require a minimum of only 300 milligrams per day, while infants should receive no more than 600 milligrams per day.

    Problems

    • Americans frequently consume up to 4,000 milligrams of sodium daily, far above the maximum recommendation, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. This excessive sodium intake contributes to high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses. Much of this sodium hides in food additives, encouraging people to take in far more sodium than they realize.

    Exceptions

    • People suffering from certain diseases, such as high blood pressure, often must follow diets featuring sodium levels lower than the standard daily recommendations. At the other extreme, athletes who lose large amounts of sodium through perspiration may need additional sodium to remain healthy, according to Colorado State University.
