Doctors typically administer 2-CDA through an intevenous line.

Cladribine, also known as 2-CDA, is a chemotherapy drug used in the treatment of certain cancers. It should only occur under the supervision of a medical doctor, who must monitor the patient for possible serious side effects.

  1. Identification

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, Cladribine is an antimetabolite commonly used to treat patients suffering from hairy cell leukemia---a blood/bone marrow cancer. Patients typically receive it as a single ingredient.

    Function

    • According to eMedicineHealth, Cladribine inhibits the growth of cancerous cells in the blood and bone marrow, while also interfering with metastasis---the spreading of cancer cells to organs and lymph glands. Doctors administer it in the form of an injection or intravenous drip.

    Side Effects

    • According to MedicineNet, Cladribine suppresses human bone marrow function, which increases the patient's risk of infection. It also has the ability to harm the kidneys and nervous system. Patients should immediately contact their doctor if symptoms of infection are present, or if they experience tingling, numbness or changes in urine output, as these symptoms could indicate kidney or nervous system complications.
