Some Alabama drivers might need SR-22 auto insurance.

In the state of Alabama, high-risk drivers may be required to carry SR-22 auto insurance if they commit various driving-related infractions. Alabama SR-22 insurance is available through the driver's insurance company, but must be filed for up to three consecutive years with the Alabama Motor Vehicle Division.

  1. License Suspension or Revocation

    • If your driver's license is suspended or revoked in Alabama, you are required to obtain SR-22 insurance in order to get your license back. The addition of SR-22 coverage to your insurance policy may raise your premium, and you will also be responsible for a $15 to $30 filing fee with the state.

    DUI and Reckless Driving

    • In Alabama, drivers that have been classified as high-risk because of reckless driving citations or driving under the influence convictions may be required by the state to purchase additional SR-22 auto insurance.

    Uninsured or At-Fault Drivers

    • If you are in an accident in Alabama but cannot pay for damages because of lack of auto insurance, you may be required by the state to purchase SR-22. Drivers with unsatisfactory judgments, such as those who may have judged as "at fault" after an accident, may also require SR-22.
