What Is Final Maturity on a Series EE Bond?
Both paper EE savings bonds and the newer electronic EE bonds keep your savings secure and earn interest until final maturity. Keep track of your bonds' maturity dates so that your money keeps working for you.

Final Maturity
-
The Treasury states that the final maturity of EE bonds is 30 years, at which time they will cease to earn interest. Check the final maturity date of your bonds using the Treasury's Savings Bond Calculator (see Resources). Cash them at or before this date so you can invest elsewhere and keep earning.
Value at Final Maturity
-
The value of your bonds at final maturity depends on the purchase date and whether you purchased paper or electronic bonds. The government guarantees that paper bonds purchased at half face value will reach face value in 20 years. If not, the government will bump them up to face value and continue paying interest for 10 more years. Electronic bonds, which sell at face value, redeem for face value plus interest at maturity.

Warning
-
You must pay federal income tax on the interest on EE bonds, except for special circumstances such as use for qualifying educational expenses. Consider the tax consequences when you choose to cash your EE bonds.
