Disc problems are often the result of an injury, such as from sports or an automobile accident. Other problems are brought about by wear and tear on the discs in the neck and back due to advancing age.
Types

Disc problems can cause several types of pain. Acute pain is short term and occurs with initial injury or after surgery. Chronic pain lasts for months or years and limits the activities of those suffering from it. Neuropathic pain is best described as burning or tingling that may radiate down the arms or legs.

Many treatments are prescribed for the relief of pain associated with disc problems. NSAID medications, joint injections and nerve blocks may be administered in hopes of decreasing pain and restoring body function. Severe disc problems often require surgery.

Despite treatment, many people who suffer from disc problems in the neck and back are unable to live normal, productive lives. They may become disabled and unable to work or perform daily-living activities. Many people have disability insurance to cover the costs of treatment and living expenses while they are disabled.

Chiropractors and physicians use the Oswestry Back Disability Index to determine the severity of back pain. Patients answer questions about their pain as honestly as possible to help the health care provider determine the level of the patient's disability.
