Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician Training

Biomedical equipment technicians install, troubleshoot, repair or replace medical equipment, and certified technicians increase their earning potential and career advancement opportunities. Certification demonstrates a commitment to the profession and a desire to create safe health care environments.

  1. Minimum Requirements

    • A degree is not required for biomedical equipment technicians; however, certified biomedical equipment technicians must hold an associate's degree in biomedical engineering or technology. Many technicians receive on-the-job training for maintenance on less complex medical equipment.

    Formal Training

    • Biomedical equipment technicians can earn an associate's degree or certificate in medical technology, while some technicians pursue a bachelor's degree in a similar field for more advanced career opportunities. Continuous education courses are required because the field of medical technology progresses rapidly, and technicians are expected to remain current on new technology.

    Skills Training

    • Skills training includes information on the mechanics of maintaining medical equipment, ensuring patient welfare and safety and keeping records. Technicians learn to work in a detail-oriented environment and keep meticulous notes and records.

    Online Training

    • Online biomedical equipment technician training certificate programs offer options to traditional colleges and vocational schools. Online courses typically take from one semester to two years to complete, depending on the curriculum.

    Certification

    • The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) is one reputable organization that offers biomedical equipment technician certification. AAMI certification requires an associate's degree plus two to three years of full-time work experience, or four years of full-time work experience. Technicians must recertify every three years.
