The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that New Jersey, while small in size, has over 5.7 million licensed drivers.

Thousands of citizens each year look forward to receiving their New Jersey driver's license. Should you pass your driving test, being prepared with the essential documents needed for both identity and address verification will prevent multiple unnecessary trips to the Motor Vehicle Commission.

  1. Licensed Driver

    • Have a licensed driver accompany you to the test. Should you fail the test and not receive your driver's license, you will still be limited by the laws pertaining to your student examination permit, including having to have a licensed driver 21 or older in the car with you at all times.

    Examination Permit

    • Bring your validated New Jersey student learner's permit. You received this document on your first day of driving school.

    License Plate Decals

    • As of May 1, 2010, New Jersey requires all drivers under age 21 to display reflecting red decals on the front and rear of any motor vehicle they operate. The decals are available for $4 from any New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission office.

    Car

    • The car you bring for your road test must be registered and have a current inspection sticker and current insurance card. Also, the car's emergency brake must be accessible from the passenger seat. Rental cars are allowed; however, the test examiner must be listed as an additional driver. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission does not provide vehicles for driving tests.
