How do I Compare Real Estate Companies?

An agent knows her way around in her area of service.

A real estate company performs a valuable service, particularly for a buyer or seller unfamiliar with a neighborhood or the process. Obtain an agent who matches your needs, in the same manner you select any significant service---with research and review.

  1. Select an Agency by Service Area

    • Depending on the locale and size of market, an agency can serve a full community or a neighborhood. The book "Buying a House" suggests driving the target neighborhood as the best solution to finding the agencies that serve a given location.

    Narrow by Agency Type

    • Agencies can be full-service, serving both buyers and sellers for the full purchase or sales process, or buyer only, or offering select services for a flat fee. In most cases, as the book "The Wall Street Journal Complete Home Owner's Guide Book" explains, the seller will be paying the agency from the proceeds of the sale; this does not mean they won't be doing a good job for a buyer---it's just a reality check.

Finalize Choice by Agent Speciality and Compatibility

    • Selecting the actual agent, typically an independent contractor for the agency, is the final step. The person may specialize in retirees, lofts or ranches; they come in all personalities. "Buying a House" says to take your time: Interview the agent much like you would a job candidate---for the actual work, and for personality "fit."
