Murphy Bed Problems

Murphy Bed Problems thumbnail
Murphy beds are popular in studios, lofts and other places without a lot of space.

For those with a lack of space, a Murphy bed is a possible solution. This type of bed attaches to a wall, pulls down when you need it and hides away when you need extra space. Before making a Murphy bed or installing one in your home, be aware of some common problems. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Assembly

    • Whether you buy a Murphy bed or create the bed from online plans, you must assemble the basic bed frame, which holds your mattress. You may have problems finding the specific hardware required for the job and even have some difficulties finding well-made instructions that clearly explain the steps.

    Installation

    • To install your Murphy bed, you must drill holes into the wall and attach brackets, which keep the bed steady when in use. Most plans call for a total of four studs in the vicinity of the bed and it's a problem if you have less studs or plain drywall in your space. Adding the piece to an apartment, also may not be allowed by your lease.

    Comfort

    • A Murphy bed lacks a traditional box spring and consists only of a mattress on a bare platform. For those accustomed to sleeping on a firmer mattress, they may not find this bed as comfortable.
