What to Look for in Choosing a Good Bed Mattress
Mattress shopping is best done in person, so you can evaluate the beds before you buy. Evaluate your personal preferences then buy the best-quality mattress you can afford. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Firmness
-
Mattress firmness is a matter of personal preference. Mattress designations like "firm" or "plush" denote the comfort level (not support), with "plush" being the softest, "plush pillow top" more firm and "cushion firm" the hardest. Beds and Bedding Georgia notes that "harder is better" is a myth. Lie on mattresses until you find the consistency you like best, and try out a number of your favorite sleep positions. Compare mattresses in that firmness range and spend at least 15 minutes on the bed before you buy.
Size
-
Size does matter for mattresses, especially if you share your bed with a partner. Choose a queen or a king bed over a full, since they are both longer and wider. This way you and your sleep partner will have adequate room.
-
Coils
-
A supportive mattress should keep your hips, spine and back in the same position they would be if you were standing with good posture. ABC News suggests choosing a mattress with at least 390 coils. Mattresses with fewer coils tend to be flimsy and don't offer sufficient support.
