What Form of Violation Is Not Having a Front License Plate? thumbnail
Not all states require a front license plate.

Thirty-two states require drivers to display both a front and a rear license plate. If the state gives you two plates, you must display them on your car unless your car meets the requirements for an exception.

  1. Violation

    • Driving without a front license plate in a state that requires one can result in a warning ticket or a traffic ticket with a fine. As with speeding, it's up to the discretion of the officer writing the ticket whether you get off with a warning to attach a front license plate.

    Plate Location

    • Even if your car didn't come equipped with a front license plate holder, you are required to install one along with a front license plate. The Unofficial DMV Guide states that a license plate cannot be displayed on the dashboard. It must be affixed to the front of the car.

    Exception

    • If you own an antique or special-interest car that's not designed to hold a front license plate, you may be able to get by without one on that car. Check with your local motor vehicles office to see if your car qualifies to display only a rear license plate.
