How Is Sheepskin Made?

Sheepskin is the hide of a sheep. It is preserved with the wool attached and used for rugs, clothing and upholstery. Sheepskin production requires the slaughter of a sheep, and may be a secondary use of sheep raised for mutton.

  1. Slaughter

    • Sheep are slaughtered when their wool is the desired length. This length is entirely up to the producer. The wool can be completely shorn or several inches long.

    Drum Salting

    • The drum salting process involves loading the fresh skins into a drum with salt and curing chemicals. This drum is spun and the salt and chemicals are evenly spread across the skins. The skins are then removed and laid flat to dry.

    Conveyor Salting

    • In conveyor salting the salt is poured over the skin as it moves across a conveyor. The skins are then folded in half and stacked to dry.

    Function of Salting

    • The salt used is specially prepared with chemical additives to kill fungus and bacteria. This allows for the the skin to remain clean and sanitary as it dries.
