How to Compare Deck Materials
When people think of backyard decks, they often think of wood. Many types of materials are available for decks, however. They generally fall into three categories: softwood, hardwood and man-made materials such as plastic, metal or composite decking. Main considerations when choosing the right material for your deck include cost, durability and aesthetics. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Cost
-
Wood decks need to be treated to maintain their appearance. Softwood materials are often less expensive on the front end when compared to hardwood or man-made materials. Both softwoods and hardwoods need to be treated over the course of their lifetime to maintain their appearance. A man-made material such as composite decking requires less long-term maintenance.
Durability
-
Softwood and hardwood decks can last a long time. They just need to be stained or sealed and maintained properly. Composite, plastic or metal decking does not ever need to be stained, but it still needs to be washed down regularly with proper cleaners because it may acquire mildew.
-
Aesthetics
-
Decks made of wood have a much warmer and natural "feel." Fiberglass, plastic or metal decks tend to have a more commercial feel and may be more appropriate for large buildings. Composite decking materials are available in many styles and colors, and some are even made to look like wood.
