History
-
The original naval flag for Massachusetts, on one side, displayed a green pine tree against white and read "An Appeal to Heaven," and on the other side, the coat of arms. In 1915 this design was declared the first official state flag in the United States. In 1971 it was altered to its modern design, displaying only the coat of arms.
Symbols and Motto
-
Massachusetts' place among the first 13 states is represented by the white star. The Latin motto around the coat of arms reads "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem." This translates as "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty." The Native American's arrow is pointed to the ground, symbolizing peace.

Law
-
A description of the flag and its official variations are declared under Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 2. The official variations include a governor's flag that is shaped as a triangle and a maritime flag with the coat of arms on one side and the original green tree on the other. Also described are rules for displaying the flag.
