The History of Lucky Charms Cereal
Lucky Charms was the first cereal to include marshmallows in its recipe. “Magically delicious” Lucky Charms contains a mixture of frosted oat pieces mixed with colored marshmallow shapes.

History
-
The history of Lucky Charms begins in 1963, when John Holahan, vice president of General Mills, combined Cheerios and orange marshmallow circus peanuts. The following year, Lucky Charms cereal appeared on store shelves. It consisted of oat cereal and colored marshmallows, and had a leprechaun mascot.

Initial sales were disappointing, which led to the addition of sugar coating to the oat cereal pieces. The recipe for the cereal then remained unchanged until 2005, when Chocolate Lucky Charms made its debut as an additional flavor.

Marshmallows
-
The four original marshmallow shapes resembled a charm bracelet of pink hearts, yellow moons, green clovers and orange stars. Since the 1975 addition of blue diamonds, the marshmallow shapes have varied. Whether quietly or with promotional hype, new marshmallow shapes are introduced and older or less popular shapes are eliminated.
Lucky the Leprechaun
-
Lucky the Leprechaun has represented Lucky Charms both on the cereal box and in every animated commercial since 1964. Other than the simplification of his name, from L.C. Leprechaun to Lucky, the mascot for Lucky Charms cereal has remained unchanged.
