Peer-to-peer file sharing was initially made popular by Napster and Kazaa. LimeWire is a similar technology that is freely available, allowing you to share an assortment of files. The software has a built-in search feature that allows you to search thousands of users' computers for a favorite song, movie or computer application via BitTorrent or Gnutella.

FrostWire is promoted as "Fastest BitTorrent+Gnutella P2P Program" on the official FrostWire website. It is dubbed as a truly open source alternative to LimeWire. FrostWire has all the same features as LimeWire but adds iTunes compatibility, BTIH Magnet torrent downloads and improved BitTorrent technology over its competitor.

Warning
-
In the United States, the legality of peer-to-peer file sharing is hotly debated. Transferring copyrighted material to users, even anonymously, is seen as copyright infringement. Sending or receiving copyrighted material is considered illegal. However, both LimeWire and FrostWire get around this legal issue by having their users agree to a legal disclosure within the software before using it the first time. This places the full burden of responsibility on the user.
