What to Consider When Buying a Computer

What to Consider When Buying a Computer thumbnail
You should consider many factors when buying a computer.

You have dozens of questions to consider when buying a new computer. Are using the computer for simple applications, gaming or more advanced tasks, such as editing? What can you afford? Do you need the more cost-effective power of a desktop computer or the convenience and mobility of a laptop computer?

  1. Types

    • Desktop computers are bulkier and take up more space, but they offer more processing performance and sturdier build for the money. Laptop computers are more expensive but are portable. Netbooks are smaller laptops, sometimes with a 10- or 12-inch screen, and good for children. Tablets are ideal for browsing the web or reading e-books and are small and light. You can choose between Windows or Apple operating systems or even Linux.

    Cost

    • For most everyday computing needs, such as browsing the web, email, word processing and storing and editing photos, you can find a PC for less than $1,000. For a high-performance gaming PC, expect to spend more than $3,000.

    Considerations

    • Carefully review the specifications of computers you are interested in purchasing. A computer that has 1 GB of memory installed will handle demanding applications more smoothly than one with 512 MB of memory.
