What Is the Army Ranking Scale?

The military ranking system is a method used to establish chain of command in army ground forces. The higher the rank of an individual, the more authority and respect they receive, as well as a higher level of pay.

  1. Levels

    • There are three basic levels of duty in the United States Army. The lowest category or ranking is enlisted servicemen. Warrant officers are a higher category of servicemen. Officers who are in positions of authority are commissioned officers.

    Privates

    • A newly enlisted servicemen is an E-1 while completing basic training and an E-2 while completing AIT. These servicemen are in training, and have the sole duty to follow orders. The rank of E-3 or Private First Class is awarded after a year of service under the recommendation by their commanding officer.

    Ranked Enlisted Servicemen

    • The ranks E-4 through Sargent Major of the United States Military are ranked positions for enlisted servicemen, which can be obtained without higher education or specialized training. The common terms for these rankings, in order are: Specialist/ Corporal, Sargent, Staff Sargent, Sargent First Class, Master Sargent and Sargent Major.

    Warrent Officers

    • Warrant Officers are servicemen who have undergone officer training and are technical experts in a specialty field. As they pass through progressive levels of expertise, they achieve a higher rank on levels one through five.

    Commissioned Officers

    • Commissioned officers require officer training attendance and have some collegiate education. There are seven ranked positions for commissioned officers, which are, in order: second lieutenant, first lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel and general.

    Generals

    • There are five ranked levels of generals, the highest of which is the commander of the armed forces. The ranked positions are Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, General, and General of the Army.
