How to Compare Catholics to Lutherans

Lutheran evangelicals broke away from the Catholic Church in 1517. Despite many attempts to heal the theological divide between Catholicism and Lutheranism, there are a number of fundamental differences between the two faiths.

Lutheran Beliefs

Lutherans believe that people are saved by faith in Christ. They also believe that the only true authority on religious doctrine is the Holy Scriptures, and they do not believe that it is spiritually proper to pray to Mary or the saints. Lutherans also disagree that Christians must submit to the authority of the Pope.

Catholic Beliefs

Catholics believe that people are saved through faith, but works and love are also necessary. They believe that the Pope and the Church have the authority to determine doctrine. They feel that the Virgin Mary is an intermediary between God and humans, and it is appropriate to offer prayers to her and to the saints. Finally, Catholics believe that the Pope has divine authority.

Similarities

Pastor Michael Walther from the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Collinsville, Illinois, indicates that there are several similarities between the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Among other things, the two churches are strongly united in their opposition to abortion.
