How to Report Abuse on Twitter

Twitter, the social networking service, allows users to connect to others within the site, including celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher and Lady GaGa. The popularity of Twitter brings about issues such as harassment and abuse. If you encounter any abuse on Twitter, there are ways to report it.

  1. Defining Abuse

    • According to Twitter guidelines, abuse or threats must include a specific time and location for the abuse, physicality and an intent of harm. Location refers to the location of the person making the threats, while physicality refers to the presence of a physical threat, such as threatening to assault someone. If these are present, the abuse should be reported to Twitter directly, as it is a violation of the terms of service.

    Reporting

    • To report abuse to Twitter, visit the ticket submission page on the Twitter website. Supply your account name, the account name of the person doing the abuse and a link to the status updates, Twitter messages, that contain the alleged abuse or threats. To report without an account, click the link reading “No account? Login problems?” on the ticket submission page.

    Immediate Threats

    • Twitter suggests that if there is immediate danger from the abuse in question, you should call 911 or local authorities.
