What Is an AOL Proxy Server?

A proxy server is the access point between a user and the Internet. With an AOL proxy, the server is never assigned an Internet Protocol (IP) address.

  1. How It Works

    • When AOL users connect to AOL, they receive an IP address from AOL. The request is sent to the proxy server and to the Web server, but the IP changes from the AOL user to the proxy server. The information is sent back to the IP proxy server, which determines what user requested data and sends it back. AOL users can use the same Web server with two different proxies.

    Problems

    • Web traffic data uses the IP addresses to identify certain users. If a AOL user has information through multiple proxy servers, more users may show up on the Web data. Websites can ban IP addresses from one of the proxy server's of an AOL user, thus not allowing access to the website.

    Significance

    • Knowing more about AOL proxy servers will prepare you for what kind of problems can occur and help you determine if the AOL proxy server is right for you.
