What Are the New Car Batteries Made Of? thumbnail
Sulfuric acid is commonly found in car batteries and is extremely hazardous.

For the diverse array of vehicles on the road today, all car batteries are essentially responsible for the same thing: starting the engine and powering the vehicle's electronics when the engine is off.

  1. Six Cells

    • Modern car batteries are comprised of six cells, each containing sulfuric acid and water. The blend of sulfuric acid and water is known as an electrocyte.

    Positive and Negative Plates

    • Inside each battery's six cells are alternating plates of lead and lead dioxide. The plates alternate based on their polarity, with lead plates holding a negative charge and lead dioxide plates holding a positive charge.

    Casing

    • The casing of modern automotive batteries is made from polypropylene, a molded thermoplastic polymer.
