What Is a Pneumatic Trough Used for?

A pneumatic trough is a large glass dish or container used in a laboratory. It collects gases such as oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. Water is a requirement for pneumatic troughs. Mercury was formerly used, but health and safety issues prohibit its use for modern day troughs.

  1. Requirements

    • Collecting gas in the pneumatic trough requires four parts. The trough itself, a glass bulb to collect the gas, a shelf to hold the bulb, and a liquid in the trough.

    History

    • The pneumatic trough was created in the 18th century by Stephen Hales. He was a chemist and inventor who studied gases using this device.

    Materials

    • Pneumatic troughs are made of polypropylene that is a better material than metal. The polypropylene troughs do not corrode, are almost unbreakable, and are lighter than metal.
