Proper Pruning for Blueberry Bushes

Proper Pruning for Blueberry Bushes thumbnail
Blueberry bushes need annual pruning.

For healthy plants with maximum yields, prune blueberry bushes in late winter or early spring while plants are dormant. Blueberry bushes that aren't pruned become weak and twiggy. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. The Basics

    • When pruning blueberry bushes, try to achieve a narrow base and open center. For maximum fruit yields, remove no more than two or three mature canes each year. Remove broken or damaged canes, as well as those more than seven years old. Cut out the canes near ground level.

    Highbush Blueberries

    • Prune highbush blueberries as described above, with a few additional cuts. Cut out canes that hang low and will touch the ground when heavy with fruit. Late in the season, cut out short, soft growth that develops at the base of the shrub.

    Rejuvenation

    • After removing dead or diseased canes, cut out the oldest two or three canes. Remove canes that cross each other, and any canes that block sunlight to the center of the plant. Also remove any canes that were unproductive in the previous season.
