Lava lamps are an icon of 1970s-style decor.

The 1970s saw a continuation of the 1960s trend toward sleek, synthetic, space-age-style decor. Modern designs were popular and appliances--like dishwashers--previously considered a luxury were adopted as kitchen necessities. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Colors

    • Colors were a big part of interior decorating during the 1970s. Popular colors included green, yellow, orange, brown and turquoise. White was popular, with accents in any of the preceding colors.

    Materials

    • Synthetic materials were popular materials for furniture and accents. Many of these materials were first introduced in the 1970s. Decorating with sleek metal and glass was common, as was using Lucite, chrome, plastic and vinyl. Wood and leather was still popular, as long as it helped create a sleek, space-age look.

    Accessories

    • A number of decorative accessories are associated with the 1970s. However, few have a stronger association than the lava lamp. Torchiere lamps were popular, as were arching floor lamps with multiple light sources.
