Disadvangtages of Mutual Funds thumbnail
Mutual Funds are a popular investment but they do have disadvantages.

Mutual funds provide one way for the average person to invest in the stock market. Many mutual funds have low fees and provide a diversified portfolio of stocks. But mutual funds also have some disadvantages investors should understand.

  1. Fees

    • Many mutual funds have low fees and expenses but some are quite expensive. Investors need to understand all the fees associated with a mutual fund before purchase and compare fees for other mutual funds that invest in a similar manner.

    Management Mistakes

    • Individuals investing in mutual funds do not have control of how the money is invested. In fact, it is even hard to know what stocks and other investments the fund holds at any one time. Investors are placing faith in the fund's management team to make wise decisions on their behalf.

    Risk of Loss

    • Unlike some other forms of investments, mutual funds do not have a guaranteed rate of return. In fact, investors can lose all of their money with a mutual fund. While this is not likely to occur this is too great a risk for some investors to take.
