Keep mosquitoes away with this minty solution.

While there may not be scientific studies to support the use of Listerine as mosquito repellent, there is a plethora of testimony from former mosquito-bite sufferers who swear by it. If you prefer not to use traditional pesticides, Listerine may be worth a try. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Active Ingredient

    • Listerine can be applied to the skin or to the area surrounding the house to repel--and even kill--mosquitoes and other insects. According to the Pest Information website, the thyme used in Listerine serves to deter these pests.

    Directions

    • To use Listerine as a mosquito repellent, simply dilute the mouthwash to half strength and pour it into a spray bottle. Use it to spray your skin, deck, picnic tables, doorways and window areas. If you can't find a spray bottle, rubbing Listerine directly on your skin works well, too.

    Drawbacks

    • You'll have to reapply the Listerine every two hours to keep it working effectively. Don't spray it directly on wood surfaces, as it may cause damage.
