Guide to Lawn Grass Types
Wise homeowners choose lawn grass after considering several factors: how much traffic the yard gets, how it is affected by the weather and how much time and energy is required for maintenance. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Climate and Temperature
-
Warm-season grasses grow best in hot climates and are planted throughout the South. Examples of warm-season grasses include Bahia grass, Bermuda grass and zoysia grass. Cool-season grasses tolerate cold weather and are used extensively throughout the northern part of the U.S. Cool-season grass choices include fescues, Kentucky bluegrass and ryegrass.
Drought Resistance
-
In areas of the country that experience drought, planting grasses that resist drought, such as tall fescue, Bermuda grass and buffalograss is wise. Zoysia grass is drought resistant but does better when watered frequently.
-
High Traffic
-
Some grasses perform better in high traffic areas than others do. Grasses that tolerate high traffic include perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass and Bermuda grass.
Considerations
-
The amount of maintenance required plays a big role in any decision for busy homeowners. Low maintenance choices include fescue and Bahia grass. Local lawn care professionals provide knowledgeable input as to the best choices for particular areas.
