Business formal dress code is often required at companies where employees meet with clients on a daily basis. A formal dress code fosters an environment of professionalism in the workplace and with clients.

  1. General Recommendations

    • Many people think of business formal as just one step under "black tie" attire. Modesty is key--the goal is to maintain a professional image. Also, it is imperative that your clothing is clean, ironed and well-maintained.

    Business Formal for Men

    • Typically, men wear a full suit in a business formal environment. Depending on your company or business situation, you may also be able to wear a nice pair of slacks with a shirt and tie. Many places will also require that you wear a jacket or keep one handy in case a client visits.

    Business Formal for Women

    • Business formal outfits for women are more varied than men. A full suit always provides a polished image, whether it is a suit with a skirt or with slacks. A business dress may also be worn or separates consisting of a nice skirt or slacks with a top and jacket. Skirts and dresses should reach to the knee or longer. Accessories must be tasteful and work-appropriate.

    Inappropriate Attire

    • A business formal dress code leaves little room to experiment with color and fashion. Colors and prints should be subdued and not flashy. Skin on the back, stomach, feet or cleavage area should not be visible. Accessories also should be in good repair and match the style and color of your outfit.
