Arnica Flower Properties

Arnica montana is a perennial herb native to mountainous areas in Siberia and Europe and grown in North America. Its flowers and roots are used as a topical home remedy.

  1. Identification

    • Arnica grows to be one to two feet tall. It has rounded, lower leaves and serrated, bright, green upper leaves. The tall, hairy stem ends in several flower stalks. Arnica montana flowers are similar in appearance to daisies. Its yellowish-orange flowers are two to three inches in diameter.

    Function

    • Arnica is used to treat muscle aches and swelling from insect bites or broken bones. It works by stimulating white blood cell activity that disperses congested blood and fluids from the affected area, according to the "Nutritional Supplements Health Guide." It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

    Warning

    • Arnica is available in two forms. Herbal arnica can only be used in an extremely diluted homeopathic form if taken internally because it causes dizziness, heart palpitations and muscle tremors and is fatal in large amounts. Arnica is most commonly available as a cream or ointment for external use. Excessive use sometimes results in skin irritation. Do not use arnica on broken skin.
