Galvanized steel is commonly used in many building and outdoors applications. Created by bonding steel with zinc, galvanized steel resists rusting and corrosion. It is identifiable by the spangling effect that appears when steel is dipped in zinc.

  1. Strength

    • Galvanized cables come in many configurations and sizes; accordingly, their strengths will vary. For example, the breaking strength of 1/16-inch cable in a 7 x 7 array is 480 lb., while the breaking strength of 1/32-inch cable in a 3 x 7 array is 110 lb.

    Density

    • The density of galvanized steel varies, but according to ThomasNet.com, it is in the vicinity of 7.7 g per cc. The density of stainless steel is slightly higher, at 7.85 g per cc; the layer of molten zinc added to galvanized steel slightly reduces that measurement.

    Bolts and Screws

    • When dealing with galvanized steel bolts or screws, concern yourself only with the parts that are not threaded. ASTM Standard A153 states that "in the case of fasteners such as bolts, nuts, and screws, the determination of the weight of the coating shall be made on a portion of the article that does not include threads."
