A day lily bloom only lasts for a day.

Day lilies are a tolerant, cheerful perennial that bloom in a wide range of colors and styles. These are some of the easiest flowers to grow in the home garden. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Soil and Location

    • Day lilies prefer sun, but will grow in some shade if a garden can't offer full sun. Plant day lilies where they'll get at least six hours of sun every day, in loose, quick-draining soil.

    Bulb Depth

    • A day lily site should be worked down to 12 inches before planting, to ensure loose, easy drainage. Plant the bulbs 6 to 8 inches deep, with the narrow end up for sprouting, and fill the soil in loosely around the bulb.

    Bulb Spacing

    • Day lilies do relatively well with crowding, but should be spaced depending on the plant size. Plant small or miniature day lilies 16 to 24 inches apart and standard day lilies 18 to 30 inches apart. If you're planting day lilies in a closed bed, space the bulbs at 12 to 18 inches.
